ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES:

1. PhD in Education

Entry Requirements

i) A candidate must have a Master degree with a GPA of not less than 3.5 in related field from a recognized Higher Learning Institution.

Additional Requirements

a) Good proficiency in English

b) A concept note that shall be evaluated and approved by experts in the relevant field of study.

2. Master of Higher Education Management and Development

The programme seeks to attract new and senior managers in education institutions in the region. The programme envisions the participation of a pool of institutions whereby students and senior managers shall get skills that will enable them undertake strategic planning as well as understand the environment of the Higher Education (HE). The programme is ideal for highly motivated people with determination to succeed while at the same time as holding down a demanding job.

Programme Contents

This programme is made up of four main aspects of Higher Education Management and Development.

i) The programme has an induction section, which introduces students to the major issues that face higher education management and development in Africa.

ii) Environmental challenges and agenda for institutional development.

iii) Operational aspects of university development and management.

iv) Institutional development of the university.

The Programme Objectives:

i) To provide opportunities for students to acquire knowledge of higher education management and development.

ii) To prepare candidates for further studies in higher education management and other higher education related fields.

Entry Requirements

i) Holder of Bachelor Degree in Education or any other related field with an average of “B” or a GPA of 2.8 and above from a recognized Higher Learning Institution; OR

ii) Holder of Bachelor Degree in education or any other related field with a GPA of not less than 2.7 plus 5-10 years’ of leadership or management experience at least at middle level (academic or non-academic) and have the aspiration to senior roles in University Management; OR

iii) Holder of Advanced Diploma in Education or other related field with an average of “B” or a GPA of not less than 3.0 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution; OR

iv) Holder of Postgraduate Diploma in Education or any other related field with an average of “B” or a GPA of not less than 3.0 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution.

3. Master of Education Management and Planning

This is a full-time programme. The full time will comprise four semester’s equivalent of two academic years as per the official university calendar, with students taking 5 courses in first semester, another 5 courses in second semester, while in the first semester of second year the student takes 2 courses and start writing the research proposal. The second semester of second year the student conducts data collection and write-up of the dissertation report.

In order to complete the requirements for the award of the M.Ed degree in Education Management Planning students shall be required to take a minimum of 12 courses that have 36 credit hours and submit a dissertation which will have 12 credit hours. That is a total of 48 credit hours for the course. Students must obtain pass grades in all courses and in the assessment and defense of the dissertation.

Entry Requirements

i) Holder of Bachelor Degree in Education (BED) and any other related field with an average of “B” or a GPA of 2.8 and above from a recognized Higher Learning Institution; OR

ii) Holder of Bachelor Degree in education and any other related field with an average of “B” or a GPA of not less than 2.7 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution plus five years’ of work experience; OR

iii) Holder of Advanced Diploma in Education with an average of “B” or a GPA of not less than 3.0 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution; OR

iv) Holder of Postgraduate Diploma in Education with an average of “B” or a GPA of not less than 3.0 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution.

4. Master of Arts in Linguistics

The Aim of the Programme

In studying languages, the linguist’s aim is to build a theory of language in order to explain how languages originated, how they have evolved, in what form they exist in the human brain, how languages change over time and space, and how they are used to communicate information and feelings. Such a theory comes with an in-depth understanding of the structure of language based on empirical investigations of languages.

The aim of the MA Linguistics programme is to foster scholarship and research in the linguistics discipline, both for students who are planning on continuing with PhD programme in linguistics and for those who will be seeking professional work in a range of fields for which a background in linguistics is required. Students will be exposed to the fundamental concepts in the field and be provided with a solid foundation in linguistic analysis.

6.3.2 Programme Objectives:

i) To help students acquire a strong understanding of concepts, current issues and research methods in the core areas of linguistics.

ii) To develop specialized knowledge of theory and practice in targeted areas of linguistics.

iii) To develop an ability among the students to apply their knowledge professional and practical tasks in Linguistics.

iv) To provide an opportunity for new ideas in linguistics to be explored and discussed.

v) To provide training at postgraduate level to students who wish to do independent research in linguistics.

Entry Requirements

i) Holder of Bachelor Degree in Education (BED) with a specialization in the Languages with an average of “B” or a GPA of 2.8 and above from a recognized Higher Learning Institution; OR

ii) Holder of Bachelor Degree in Education (BED) with a specialization in the Languages with a GPA of not less than 2.7 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution plus five years of work experience; OR

iii) Holder of Advanced Diploma in Education with a specialization in the Languages with an average of “B” or a GPA of not less than 3.0 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution; OR

iv) Holder of Postgraduate Diploma in Education (languages) with an average of “B” or a GPA of not less than 3.0 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution.

5. Bachelor of Arts with Education

This programme intends to give students the foundations of education. The areas of specialization are: History, Geography, English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Computer Economics, Literature, Commerce, Philosophy and Religious Studies.

Entry Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E) with at least two principal passes in any Arts subjects. They must have at least three (3) credit passes in the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E “O” level) including English. In additional, the applicant must have scored in the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A- Level) a total of 4.0 points or more in appropriate subjects at the same sitting; OR

ii) Candidates must hold a Diploma in Education Arts subjects with a minimum GPA of 3.0 from an institution recognized by the University and or by Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).

Greetings and welcome to the School of Education.

On behalf of the School of Education and on my own behalf, I take this opportunity to welcome you all to St Augustine University of Tanzania, (SAUT) a university of your choice. Your ambition of joining higher education has come at right time when young professionals with various skills are highly needed in Tanzania. All academicians are called to help our government to realize the vision 2025 which states that;

To have a Tanzanian, who is well educated, knowledgeable, and skilled, to handle national and international challenges in various fields by 2025.

School of Education is committed to the cultivation and nurturing of a transformative training in cutting-edge disciplines in education that are responsive to societal needs. Our intention is to produce graduates who are creative, innovative and solution driven. In practical terms, this means that besides equipping our students with excellent academic skills and competencies, we intentionally influence character development and integrity of heart which are the key foundations in making choices for person life’s journey. The Faculty of Education is organized into five departments namely; Geography, History, Languages and Linguistics and Education Foundations. All departments in the faculty are guided by an educational philosophy, which is student-centred with a focus on meeting the varied needs of our students, nurturing and challenging them to grow socially, physically, morally and intellectually. We aim to equip students with the knowledge, skills, competence and values needed in globalizes world, and to nurture future educational leaders and researchers. Through our Masters and Bachelor degree programmes, our students become well-trained in educational theory and practices, which prepare them for careers in both academia and applied research. We have a strong and reputable team of faculty members who are not only engaged at the frontiers of teaching and research both at home and abroad, but also are creating opportunities for our students to be mentored in all phases of the learning and research process. Besides, our School offers various first-rate training programmes for principals, teachers, as well as administrators. In fact, it has made extraordinary contributions to improve education in Tanzania.
